Cards for Heroes is an organization that provides blank, hand-made greeting cards to soldiers serving overseas who want to show their family how much they care. They don't have access to Hallmark stores, so they can't go buy their cards.
WE can help! Make general cards for all occasions and send them on to Cards for Heroes. The cards will be passed on to our servicemen and lovingly used for special occasions. Check out their blog for more information.
Meanwhile, post a comment on today's blog post and you are up for dibs on this patriotic stamp set I designed for Our Craft Lounge "All About the USA". (I'll also throw in a handful of Copic Markers- Retail value $40!!).
Then go visit the next blog in the hop, Sandy Allnock, president of Cards for Heroes, to see more ideas for Cards and the next link in the hop, then be on the lookout for prizes along the way. For the full Bloghop list visit here.
I made this very simple, manly card for my son to fill out and take to our local recruiting office (which is a few blocks away) as a Memorial Day thank you. (I have a hard time adding embellishments, ribbon or rhinestones to a man-card, which is part of the reason why this card is so clean and simple).
My 5-year-old son loves digi camo, so this Military paper by Reminisce will be a winner for him. The flag comes from the print on the backside of the camo paper. My son likes going in and talking to the recruiter, looking at all the neat stuff, and has stated many times that he would love to be a pilot in the military.
I used G85 and E47 Copic markers to make the square of paper and the stars match the dark brown/green from the camo print. Gotta love the ability to match any color!
For those of you who noticed that this set is different than the things/style I usually draw, that's because I designed this clear stamp set on the computer using Adobe Illustrator, rather than hand-drawing something and scanning it in. This set is perfect for scrapbooking, 4th of July cards, or cards to support the troops as I made above.
As I think of all the sacrifices made by servicemen over the years I need to stop and say Thank You!
My father, grandfather, and on back were all in the military. Here is a photo I found of one of my ancestors, Major General Henry W. Halleck. He was the General-in-Chief of all the Union armies before Grant took over during the Civil War.
His face is so similar to my father, it's hard to look at him and not think of all the stories my dad would tell about boot camp and basic training. My father was a teenager during WWII, and entered the service during the Korean War but never went overseas. My grandfather was an electrician for the Navy building the ships during WWII up in the shipyards of NY. All the hours of toil and struggle that these fine men went through so that I could be born in peace and prosperity and enjoy my country.
In February I had a chance to stop and visit the USS Alabama, which was built in 1940. Touring through the ghost of a ship was a sobering experience for both me and my husband. Thinking of all those men, away from their families for months at a time, sailing from the Atlantic to the Pacific, always on alert from weather or enemies... It really helped me appreciate my freedom and peace here in my homeland. I thank every person who has served, does serve, or will serve in defending and upholding their country.
Please do your part this weekend. Make some cards, make some artwork, visit a memorial, or just tell a military person "Thanks!" Don't forget to appreciate their hard work and sacrifices. Have a great holiday weekend!
Keep checking next week for more Blog Prizes from the Copic designers. Don't forget to leave a comment!!

ReplyDeleteI enjoy your blog and htanks for the cance to win.
Cards for Heros is a great organization! My son spent a year in Iraq and mail was so important to he and his family and friends. Sometimes there's just not a lot of new stuff to talk about, but a card to just let someone know that you are thinking about them is great!
ReplyDeleteI love the colors in your card-my sone is now an ary recruiter and I think He would love something like that on his desk!
Thanks for what you are doing. I have been sending cards to soldiers for quite some time now (since my step-son was stationed in Iraq), both as cards of encouragement, and also for the troops to send home. I have a box to send now, so thanks for the reminder.

ReplyDeleteSueD

ReplyDeletejenniferlynnhansen at yahoo dot com
I think it is great how you are supporting the troops. It is so important for us to let the soldiers know how they are appreciated for their sacrifice. Most of my family have been in the military at one time or another. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteA wonderful opportunity to make cards for those who need them most. Thanks for the opportunity to win as well!
ReplyDeleteLOVE this card! I don't think I'd have thought of using these colors, but they're great!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks girl for doing this. My brother just left to go to Kuwait a little over a month ago, and left from Kuwait to go to Iraq this past week. You don't realize how many people over there have no one writing to them. No one to write to. I feel that if they are risking their lives to protect ours, then we should do what we can to help them. You don't have to support any war, to support our soldiers :) Hopefully, my brother will be able to call soon, and as soon as I get his address I will be posting it.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for raising awareness and participating!
Blessings~~~Danielle Wycough
What a heart-warming post you have today! I am honored to share my cards with our servicemen/women. It is because of them I am able to continue my passion of card making. We owe each of them, and their families, so much! I pray for peaceful times around the world and a safe return for our heroes. God bless America!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your family's story. What a wonderful card you designed, and the Cards for Heroes is a great service!

ReplyDeleteceashark at aol dot com
The bloghop is an amazing event and my family will celebrate Memorial Day by making cards for CFH. I look forward to being a CFH contributor!
ReplyDeleteI received great inspirations from your card, thanks.
ReplyDeleteGreat card, Marianne. Thanks for a chance at winning this set. Memorial Day blessings to all!
ReplyDeleteAmazing card! I think this is such a great cause. As a previous military person I really understand what this cards mean to our military!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your Memorial Day post...I can't thank our service men and women enough for all the sacrifices they've made for our country. Your words brought tears to my eyes.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this. My daughter made several cards 2 years ago for soldiers at a military hospital but they were all returned because we sent them to anyone and not a specific person (I did not tell her they were returned, though, she put her heart into those cards and I'd rather she keep thinking she made someone smile). This will be perfect because we can make 2 people smile! The soldier and the recipient. Thank you again!!!!
ReplyDeleteI like your card, Marianne! Great camo colors.......of course matched with Copics. Love those markers!
ReplyDeleteHappy Memorial Weekend!
I just found the blog hop this morning. I really love that this effort is out there.
ReplyDeleteLast year, I spearheaded card donations through an employee whose boyfriend was a serviceman who told her stories of the number of depressed military men who never got mail from family (That broke my heart!)
I decided to bring in supplies to the office and we made 150 cards over a few lunch hours to send to her boyfriend to anonymously address with a sad soldier's name.
He said the look of surprise and delight at finally getting mail was amazing. They never knew he was the one trying to cheer them on.
Great card and post. The old picture is wonderful. What a treasure. I am super excited at the chance to win a few copic markers. I've never tried them!
ReplyDeleteWOW!! I totally enjoyed the craft room; but more than the room, I was touched by your heartfelt and poignant essay of your military family history, and your emotions when you visited on the ship.
ReplyDeleteI hope you are preparing yourself for your little 5 year old soldier. I believe without a doubt young ones are called to the military at a very young age. I have 7 sons, yes, 7 - and 2 (babies)there was never a question in my mind what they would do with their lives. How weak and frightened I am as one is working up his deployment as I type, for his life and well-being; but how can I hold back a dream instilled within him since he was a little boy? Thank you for your card ministry.
First of all, I am loving the title of your blog! Thanks for showing your work. I will be following your blog!
ReplyDelete
